Our Measuring Guides

Explore our guide on accurately measuring for various window treatments like 'Made to Measure Curtains', 'Made To Measure Blinds', 'Grip Fit Blinds', 'Roller Blinds', 'Allusion Blinds', 'Day & Night Blinds', and 'Roman Blinds'. This guide provides step-by-step instructions to ensure a perfect fit for your windows, irrespective of the blind or curtain style you choose.

Made To Measure Curtains

Curtain Measurement

Step 1: Measure for a New Curtain Pole or Track

(Please skip this step if there is an existing pole or track you intend to use)

First we need to measure the inside width of the window recess. (Measure A)

Next, decide how far your curtains will over-hang the wall, each side of the window. This would normally be around 20cm (8 inches) each side and enables the curtains to open wider, allowing more daylight to enter the room. (Measure B)

Now add A + B + B. This will give us the length of the track or pole needed (C), excluding finals.

Step 2: Measure for Curtains Width

(If you skipped step 1, measure your track/pole (excluding finals), this will give you measurement (C).)

When you measure for curtains width, it is important to consider the ‘gather’.

To have curtains with a medium gather when closed, we take our track/pole measurement (C), multiply it by 1.5 then divide by 2. The result is the required width of Each curtain.

For curtains with full/normal gather when closed, measurement C would be the required width of Each curtain.

If you desire a heavy gather, multiply measurement C by 2.5 then divide by 2. Again, the result is the required width of Each curtain.

Ok, we’ve now established the width of our curtains. Here’s how we work out the length.

Step 3: Measure for Curtains Drop / Length

Before we can measure for curtains length, we need to decide whether our curtains will fall to the sill, below the sill or to the floor.

1 – Sill length curtains usually finish 1/2 inch (1.25cm) above the sill.

2 – Curtains that fall below the sill usually finish 15cm (6 inches) below. This, of course, can be adjusted for personal preference.

3 – For floor length curtains you should allow 1 inch (2.5cm) clearance to avoid dragging.

Now, with your track/pole fitted 6-8 inches (15-20cm) above the window recess, measure from the top edge of the track/pole to your chosen finished length.

For Tab-top and all types of pleated curtains, write down your measurement.

For Eyelet/Ring top curtains, write down your measurement and add 1.5 inches (3.5cm) (This is the distance from the inner edge of the eyelet to the top edge of the curtain).

Made To Measure Blinds

Roman, Day & Night, Allusion, Roller & Grip Fit Roller Blinds

Inside Recess Measurement

Measure the width wall to wall at the top, middle and bottom and take note of the smallest measurement.

For Grip Fit we only need top of recess measurement.

For the drop, measure the ceiling to window sill at the left, middle and right.

Take note of the smallest number. For Vertical blinds and Allusion Blinds, we will deduct 10mm of the width and drop to allow clearance. Roman blinds we will deduct 10mm off the width but no deductions will be deducted off the drop measurement

Please note, Day and Night blinds or Roller blinds if adding a cassette option, we will deduct 10mm off the width of the cassette, so the actual fabric width will be 40mm less than the cassete

Once you have your sizes noted down, enter them into the relevant boxes on our site for an instant price.

Exact Measurement

Work out the entire space you wish to cover ensuring you have allowed enough space to provide adequate light coverage on the width and drop.

We recommend adding at least 10cm to overlap the window.

Measure the width wall to wall at the top, middle and bottom

Take note of the smallest number. Please note, For Roller blinds, On a roller blind, the width of the fabric is generally around 35mm less than the bracket to bracket measurement. If you have measured the width of the fabric on an existing blind or, if you have only measured the area that the roller blind fabric will cover, please add 3.5cm to the width measurement

For the drop, measure the ceiling to window sill at the left, middle and right.

Take note of the smallest number. For Vertical, Allusion and roman blinds, if exact is selected we will make no deductions on the width or drop off the blind, so please make sure you have made allowances.

Once you have your sizes noted down, enter them into the relevant boxes on our site for an instant price.

Perfect Fit Blinds

Perfect fit Shutters, Width Measurement

Firstly you will need to measure from the left bead to right bead at the top, middle and bottom. if you have rubber seal protruding out past the beading measure from rubber to rubber as the brackets will fit upto your rubber or beading, please note for perfect fit shutters the panel will be 46mm bigger in width and drop than your measurements given, which is 23mm each side as the panels will sit infront of your beading, please check the distance from the edge of the glass for any obstructions example AIR VENTS or BASE OF HANDLE that produde within the distance of the 23mm,

Drop Measurement include the same format as above for size and obstructions

Secondly measure from the top bead to the bottom bead or rubber seal from left, middle to right (See the image below)

Shutters

Shutter Measurement

Shutter Recess Type

Determine the best place to fit your Shutter for your style of window

Upon which style of window will your shutter be fitted? Define your window style and select the most suitable recess type.

A) Outside Recess

For windows which open inwards we recommend fitting shutters outside the recess. This will allow the window to still function fully.

B) Inside Recess

For windows which open outwards, Sash windows or windows which have no inward opening obstruction you can fit Shutters within the recess.

C) No Recess

For windows with no recess, proceed to measuring - no recess, fitting over a window frame.

Measure for your Shutters

Now that you have determined how your Shutter will be fitted, you are ready to take measurements. All you have to do now is provide the exact measurements for your choice of fitting.

A) Measuring - Inside Recess

Width

Width measurement Take *3 measurements Top, Middle and bottom inside your recess and make a note of the smallest measurement. we advise to take another 6mm off your smallest measurement. This is to allow the shutter to be fitted square in your recess. if not fitted square your shutter doors will not open and close correctly.

Drop

Take *3 measurements left, middle and right, also take another 6mm off from smallest measurement. These will be the final measurement you use when placing your order on the website.

B) Measuring - Outside Recess

Width

Take *3 measurements from the edge of the recess and choose the largest width. To your measurement, add 4.5cm for each side of the frame (left & right frame = 9cm). This will be the width you use when placing your order on the website.

Drop

Take *3 measurements from the edge of the recess and choose the largest height. To your measurement, add 4.5cm for each frame (top & bottom frame = 9cm). This will be the height you use when placing your oder on the website.

Top and bottom frames are optional, bear this in mind when adding your total frame width.

C) Measuring - No Recess

Width

Take *3 measurements from the outside edge of your window frame and choose the largest width. To your measurement, add 4.5cm for each side of the frame (left & right frame = 9cm). This will be the width you use when placing your order on the website.

Drop

Take 3* measurements from the outside edge of your window frame and choose the largest height. To your measurement, add 4.5cm for each frame (top & bottom frame = 9cm). This will be the height you use then placing your order on the website.

Top and bottom frames are optional, bear this in mind when adding your total frame width.
